And we are back again with a few more dos and don’ts of boating. To recap Part 1, we previously discussed how important it is to be always prepared when you’re on a boat. You need to follow boating rules, check the weather forecast before setting a sale, never drink and boat, help someone after ensuring it is safe to dive in, and never forget to lift the ladder.
In Part 2, we will cover the remaining six essentials of boating. By following these tips, you can prevent accidents and make sure that your pleasure cruise does not take a wrong turn.
So, without further ado, let’s continue:
Dos
Do Keep Life Jackets Onboard
The most important item that every boat should have is a life jacket. You should have several based on where you are going. Imagine having a leisure sail at night when the weather suddenly changes, and it starts to rain heavily. Your boat tips to the side and then capsizes. You hit your head on a beam and fall into the water. After an hour or two, you regain your senses and find yourself face-up floating in the water. Thanks to the life jacket you were wearing, you could save yourself even when you were unconscious.
When choosing a life jacket, make sure that it is suited for the journey you are making. If you have children with you, make them wear simple life jackets rather than automatic inflatable ones.
Do-Follow Docking Procedures
When you approach the shore, move your bumpers out and reduce your speed. This will signal the other boaters nearby that you are about to dock. Once in your slip, secure the boat with lines to ensure that a change in water level might not push it into other boats.
Do-Follow Anchoring Procedures
When docking your boat or shutting off the engine in the middle of the sea, you need to ensure that your anchor is thrown in the right formation. You should throw at least two anchors in the water forming a V. This will keep your boat from drifting. In deep water, make sure the anchor’s chain is at least 20 feet to 30 feet long.
Don’ts
Don’t Overload Your Boat
Did you know there’s a limit to how many people you can bring overboard? You will find the capacity instructions in your boat’s manual. An unbalanced craft can make people trip, and the vessel tip left and right continuously.
Don’t Disturb Wildlife Areas
Disturbing wildlife areas on or in water is dangerous and illegal. Imagine coming across a pod of whales. While this mammal is not dangerous, it has been known to attack humans. Whales can measure up to 100 feet. If they accidentally bump into your boat, it might capsize.
Don’t Forget to Fill Up On Gas
Not all marinas have a fuel dock. So, before you set sail, make sure the tank is full. You wouldn’t want to be stranded in the middle of the sea, now would you?
