Prepare Boat Docks for the Winter. You need to prepare your boat dock for the winter months. When it gets too cold outside, you will not be using your boat dock as much as you did in the summer. Does this mean that you neglect to look after your boat dock completely?
No, it means that you should look after your boat dock even more. You need to care for your boat dock if you want it to stay in good condition. Even though boat docks can withstand the freezing cold temperature, you should let it fend for itself in the winter season. In fact, you need to take the following measures to protect your boat dock:
1. Put Away All Your Accessories
Do you have any accessories that you place on your boat dock? If you do, keep them away in the winter. These accessories may include drink holders, chairs, and tables. You can either store them in your garage, basement or buy separate storage spaces for them.
Wherever you keep them, just ensure that they are protected from cold temperatures and moisture. Not only do you want a maintained, ready to use the floating dock in the summer, but also accessories.
2. Tie Your Floating Dock to the Shoreline
Make sure to tie your floating dock to the shoreline, so it stays in one place all winter. The lake may freeze, but that depends on where you live and how low the temperatures get there.
If the lake freezes, it can damage your floating dock. You should remove your floating dock and place it in a safe place. This includes storing the anchors as well.
3. Buy a Boat Deck Cleaner
If you do not have a boat deck cleaner already, get one. A deck cleaner contains chemicals that protect your boat deck from harmful elements. Fungus and algae can develop on your boat dock and damage it.
You will also find sand and dirt on it. You need to clean your boat dock with the deck cleaner before winter arrives.
4. Inspect for Waterproofing
Check your boating dock for waterproofing before winter comes. Pour water on your boating dock to check if waterproofing is still working or you need to get your dock waterproofed again.
If an area is not repelling water, get it waterproofed. You can also reseal your boat dock before winter.
5. Inspect the Boat Lift
Is your boat lift working? Check to see if your boat lift can hold air properly. If your boat lift cannot hold air properly, get it repaired. Even though you can wait to make the repairs, it is advised that you do it now. Check to ensure everything look proper and good and is secure and working as it should. You can even hire a professional to check the boat lift for you.
