Wouldn’t it be nicer if you could enjoy your fishing trip without continuously struggling to keep the annoying bugs away? Whether you’re angling on rivers, lakes, streams, or the ocean, those voracious insects will be there to keep you from appreciating your surroundings and serenity like always.
However, like all other things, there are strategies to keep the pesky bugs away while you’re fishing out on the water. Here are five of them:
1- Wear Appropriate Fishing Gear
Most flying insects can bite you through tight-fit clothing. So, if you’re leaving for a fishing trip where there will be lots of bugs around, it would be best to wear full-sleeved, loose clothing to minimize the bites. Insects like mosquitoes and mayflies can’t bite you through the loose, comfortable cotton, and linen fabric.
Moreover, it is best to avoid dark-color clothing as it attracts more mosquitoes your way. Plus, it would help if you consider wrapping a handkerchief around your neck and ears or getting a net hat to cover as much skin area as possible. Lastly, you can also invest in synthetic sports gear with a high UPF for protecting yourself against the Sun.
2- Avoid the Standing Waters If You Can
Bugs usually breed in standing water, which is why you should avoid still water areas while fishing. You wouldn’t be able to escape the bugs if you’re on a lake, but you can certainly try sticking to the waters where there is a strong flow if you’re on a river or a stream. However, in this case, you should make sure you’re still floating over waters where fish might congregate.
3- Face the Breeze
Facing strong winds headfirst while you’re on the water keeps the bugs from gathering around your face, as they’re forced to cluster behind your head. That area of your body is usually already protected by a net or handkerchief, so the bugs wouldn’t bother you.
On the other hand, if there’s no wind, you can bring a small battery-operated fan with you on your fishing trip. Keep the fan pointed towards your face, and it will do just as much of a good job as the natural wind.
4- Rub Some Herbal Insect Repellent
If you don’t like spraying or rubbing chemical-induced insect repellants on your skin, you can always pick out a good-quality herbal repellent from a nearby drug store. Not only are these products good for your skin because of the all-natural ingredients, but they also deter the bugs away effectively.
5- Put Citronella Oil on Your Skin
Bugs can’t stand the scent of citronella. So, if insect repellants are not the option you want to go with, then rubbing some citronella oil on your skin would be the next best thing that works well.
As long as you follow the mentioned tips, it’ll keep the pesky bugs away whether you’re fishing from a boat or the lakeside. Happy fish hunting!
