Captain Phillips
First up is Captain Phillips, which was released in 2013. It’s a true story based on hijacking and an incident in 2009 when Somali pirates hijacked the American cargo ship MV Maersk Alabama for the first time in 200 years. The movie stars Tom Hanks as Captain Phillips Richard and Barkhad Abdi as Abduwali Muse, a Somali pirate who takes over his ship. The entire film takes place in different boats and focuses on Captain Philip’s wits that he uses to negotiate with the pirates and save his team.
Ghost Ship
Ghost Ship was released in 2002. The movie is about a salvage crew discovering a ship lost in 1962 in the Bering Sea. After boarding the ship, they discover that the ghosts of the boat’s passengers and crews are still on board. The movie stars Julianna Margulies as Epps and Emily Browning as Katie Harwood – The girl who witnessed the entire massacre that took place on the boat and then died in the closet.
It’s a movie that will give you chills and make you want to assemble a salvage crew of your own and dive deep in search of lost ships.
Life of Pi
Life of Pi was released in 2012 and was a huge success. Imagine moving to another country by sea, only to find yourself stranded with a tiger a few hours later? The movie stars Suraj Sharma as Pi Patel, an Indian boy with an interesting upbringing. They run a zoo, and after struggling with finances, Pi’s father decides to move to Canada. A storm hits their boat in the night, and a crewman throws Pi on a lifeboat. From safety, he watches the ship and his parents drown. He discovers he has company on board in the morning – a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and a ferocious tiger.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
Pirates of the Caribbean became a worldwide phenomenon because of the enigmatic and charming character of Captain Jack Sparrow. The first film in the series was released in 2003, followed by four more films. The movie revolves around Will Turner played by Orlando Bloom, a Blacksmith. He partners up with Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp, to save Elizabeth Swann, played by Keira Knightly, who is Turner’s love. When Elizabeth gets kidnapped by Hector Barbossa, Jack’s former first mate, Jack and Will set out to take revenge and steal the cursed Aztec Gold.
